DIRECTIONS AND TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

Visitors are required to show photo identification upon arrival and must wear a visitor badge at all times while on the NIST campus.

Driving Directions from Denver International Airport (DIA)

There are two options for traveling by car from DIA to Boulder:

  • E-470 Tollway/Northwest Parkway to the north of Denver
  • I-70/I-270 through Denver

The E-470 Tollway/Northwest Parkway route is generally quicker, but will cost $5.25 (3 toll plazas @ $1.75) depending upon entry and exit points. The I-70/I-270 route has no tolls, but will generally have more traffic. A map showing the Denver area routes is here. (Please note that the Northwest Parkway that continues west from E-470 at I-25 to US-36 is not shown.)

E-470 Tollway/Northwest Parkway Route

Upon leaving the terminal or the rental car area, look for signs marked "Airport Exit" and "Peña Blvd." From Peña Blvd., take Exit 6B for E-470 Tollway to the north. A map of the E-470 Tollway/Northwest Parkway can be found here. You should come to your first toll plaza (yellow circle D on map) upon entering the E-470 Tollway. Continue on E-470, passing Exit 46 at I-25 (approx. 19 miles). After I-25, the tollway is called the Northwest Parkway (blue section on map). Take the Northwest Parkway approximately 10 more miles to its end (96th St. and Interlocken Loop/StorageTek Drive) where it becomes a local traffic 4-lane arterial providing access to US-36 (Boulder turnpike). Take US-36 west to Boulder.

To get to the NIST Laboratories, stay on US-36 into Boulder, past the Foothills Parkway/Table Mesa/South Boulder Rd exit, and take the Baseline Rd exit to the right.

Stay to the left on the exit ramp, and turn left (west) on Baseline Rd. Travel under the US-36 overpass, to the first stoplight, at 27th Way. Get in the left turn lane and follow 27th Way up the hill to Broadway.

The Boulder Labs of the Department of Commerce are straight ahead, directly across Broadway.

I-70/I-270 Route

Upon leaving the terminal or the rental car area, look for signs marked "Airport Exit" and "To I-70 & I-225 via Peña Blvd." It is not necessary to take the E-470 Tollway to or from I-70, since it does not save time and costs extra.) Stay on Peña Blvd until it merges with I-70 westbound.

Stay in the left or center lanes to avoid exiting onto I-225 and other cross streets, and continue westbound on I-70 for about 4 miles. Watch for the I-270 exit on the right, labeled "Westminster/Ft. Collins," that comes at about 14 miles from DIA. It is also labeled Exit 279, "US-36 Boulder."

Take I-270 past Quebec, Vasquez, and York Streets, and past I-76 at 18 miles from DIA. Stay in the left lanes, until you pass under a "US-36 West/Boulder" sign at about 20 miles from DIA. (Do not exit to the right, towards Ft. Collins or Broadway.)

Stay on US-36 into Boulder, past the Foothills Parkway/Table Mesa/South Boulder Rd exit, and take the Baseline Rd exit to the right, at about 39 miles from DIA.

Stay to the left on the exit ramp, and turn left (west) on Baseline Rd. Travel under the US-36 overpass, to the first stoplight, at 27th Way. Get in the left turn lane and follow 27th Way up the hill to Broadway.

The Boulder Labs of the Department of Commerce are straight ahead, directly across Broadway, at about 40 miles from DIA.

Transportation

Boulder is located about 50 miles northwest of Denver International Airport (DIA). Transportation to and from Boulder is available by rental car, limousine, or bus. Most rental car companies have facilities at DIA.

The Super Shuttle Boulder, a limousine shuttle, leaves DIA every hour on the hour arriving at Boulder hotels/motels in about 70 minutes. The round trip fare to hotels is $32. Reservations are suggested. The last shuttle leaves DIA at 11:00 p.m. Phone: 303-444-0808. Web site: http://www.supershuttledenver.com/.

A regional bus service, the RTD, provides transportation between DIA and Boulder. Buses leave every half-hour to an hour depending on the time of day. The buses run between 6:15 a.m. and 11:15 p.m. Trip time is about 90 minutes, with a final stop at the Boulder bus station. The one-way fare is $8.

Several hotels/motels are located near the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Local Boulder taxi service is also available.
