NIST Scientists Share Nanoscience Results with Leading Chemists

Scientists from MSEL and EEEL recently participated in the 12th National Science Foundation Workshop on Materials Chemistry and Nanoscience, held Oct. 28-31, 2004, in Broomfield, Colo. This invitation-only meeting brought together 26 leading materials researchers from across the United States to explore the latest advancements in nanoparticles, polymers, nanocomposites, carbon nanotubes, and biomaterials, and to promote collaborations in these emerging research areas. NIST presentations addressed ongoing research in MSEL's Materials Reliability Division on "Nanopowder-Derived Functional Devices: Quantifying the Benefits of Fine Particle Size" and recent developments in EEEL's Optoelectronics Division toward a "Carbon Nanotube Optical Percolator: High Efficiency Coatings for Thermal Detectors." Other participants represented the Naval Research Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, DuPont, General Electric, the Scripps Research Institute, and 18 universities, providing a diverse range of viewpoints for technical discussions on current and future directions in nanoscience research.
