EEEL and SID Propose New Measurment Standards for Flat Panel Displays

EEEL researchers, Ed Kelley and Paul Boynton, along with the Society for Information Display (SID), have launched a new committee to revise and disseminate documentary standards for flat panel display measurements. This committee, known as the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM), will fall under the SID Definitions and Standards Committee and supersede an earlier collaboration with the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) to develop the VESA Flat Panel Display Measurements (VESA FPDM) Standard.

The first meeting of the ICDM was held in May 2007. Over 80 people were in attendance. The attendance was nothing short of overwhelming in terms of overall numbers, breath of industry representation, international make-up, and enthusiastic support. This was an informational meeting to discuss the new direction for documentary standards. The ICDM is committed to continuing the process initiated with the VESA committee, and future meetings have been planned.

The VESA FPDM effort, which was led by Ed Kelley, was a widely popular and useful standard, facilitating the development of solutions to the new measurement challenges. The ICDM will ensure that this effort will continue and will encourage even broader industry participation as the new standards will be openly available to all members of the display community regardless of affiliation. Good, open standards can foster collaboration, facilitate international trade, and lead to the dissemination of good metrology practices throughout the world.
