June, 2005 NIST Hosts Council for Optical Radiation Measurements 2005 Conference |
|
The Council for Optical Radiation Measurements (CORM) held its annual meeting May 11-13, 2005, at the NIST-Boulder Labs with EEEL Optoelectronics Division's John Lehman serving as CORM 2005 Conference Coordinator. CORM is an organization of industrial, academic, and government professionals devoted to promoting and advancing the changing needs of industry in the development of physical standards, calibration services, and collaboration programs. This year's conference was titled "Challenges in Radiometry and Photometry: Identifying and Overcoming the Challenges Facing Industry in the Measurement of Optical Radiation." Topics for this year included single photonics, carbon nanotubes, light emitting diodes (LEDs), visual displays and colorimetry. NIST staff gave over a dozen technical talks, chaired a session, and provided an invited presentation on the United States Measurement System (USMS) and its implications for optical radiation measurements. There were also tours of the nearby National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Outdoor Test Facility for photovoltaic testing and the NREL Solar Radiation Research Laboratory. The major
objective of CORM since its inception was to bring together industry,
NIST, and the National Research Council of Canada to reach a consensus
on pressing problems and national needs in optical radiation measurements.
Approximately every five years, CORM publishes a report on "Pressing
Problems and Projected National Needs in Optical Radiation Measurements,"
directed at NIST and NRC. These reports provide feedback on industry,
government, and academia's needs for new measurement technology, calibration
services, and Standard Reference Materials in the areas of photometry,
radiometry, and optical properties of materials measurements, such as
reflectance and transmittance. Approximately five years after a report
is released, NIST, through PL's Optical Technology Division, publishes
a response, describing its progress in addressing these needs. The most
recent NIST response, "NIST Response to the 7th CORM Report,"
was released as NISTIR 7194 in January 2005, timed for the upcoming 8th
CORM Report. Next year's meeting, CORM 2006, will be held May 9-11, 2006,
at NIST in Gaithersburg. Further information about CORM may be found on
their website at http://www.corm.org/. Contact: John Lehman (EEEL), 303-497-3654 |
