BOULDER LABS DIVERSITY COUNCIL SEMINAR, October 2

The Boulder Labs Diversity Council is proud to present a seminar with Virginia Valian.  Virginia is a renowned linguist from Hunter College in New York.  She specializes in cognitive science; language learning and learnability; cognition and gender, and gender equity. 

This event will be held on Friday, October 2, 2009 from 2-3 p.m. in DSRC GB-124 (Outreach Classroom).  Please direct questions to Ann Thorne, Ann.Thorne@noaa.gov, ext. 4600.

BROWN BAG LUNCH SEMINAR, October 5

Please join us for an informative Brown Bag Lunch seminar on October 5, 2009 from 12 to 1 p.m., in GC 402 of the David Skaggs Research Bldg.  The discussion will be on available insurance options under the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program.  This is for everyone whether you have been in Federal service for a long time and need a refresher on the new options or are new to Federal service.

FIRE PREVENTION MONTH
OSHE Open House, October 7

October is Fire Prevention Month and next week the NIST Office of Safety, Health & Environment (OSHE) will start promoting this year’s theme “It’s Fire Protection Week.  Stay Fire Smart!  Don’t Get Burned.”

NIST OSHE continues its pledge to work harder than ever to extend fire awareness to its employees, affiliates and others who may work on the NIST campus. On Wednesday, October 7, 2009, there will be an open house and a number of events in Building 1-1107.  Several videos, some of which were developed by the NIST BFRL group will be shown will be followed by discussions, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing for each hour until 4 p.m. A number of Fire Protection Week handouts will be offered as well, including a number of items that you can use to promote fire prevention with your children/grandchildren, such as magnets, stickers, children’s “Stay Fire Smart” Comix, Sparky bags and more!

NIST OUTLOOK 2003 AND OUTLOOK 2007 CALENDAR TRAINING

New Horizons will be offering a custom class for NIST staff on Outlook Calendar.  This class is for Outlook 2003 and 2007.  In this course, students will learn how to schedule appointments and meetings, use groups, setup distribution lists, use time zone options and set delegates.  It has been designed to assist users in converting from Oracle Calendar to Outlook Calendar.  The cost of the class is $110.  To register, please go to the CLC (https://doc.learn.com/nist) and select Training and Development from the left side of the screen.  Click the link at the top of the screen for Boulder Instructor Led Training.  Class dates:

BOULDER LABS INTERFERENCE COMMITTEE

The Boulder Labs Interference Committee exists to protect the Lab campus from harmful radio frequency interference. The committee accomplishes this by evaluating and approving new transmitters before they begin operating.  Kristen Davis is the chair of the Boulder Labs Interference Committee.  If you need to coordinate a new transmitting device, please contact her at ext. 4619 or kristen@its.bldrdoc.gov. Plan to allow the committee 3 weeks to make a decision.

SITE HEALTH AND FITNESS ITEMS

NEW EQUIPMENT IN BUILDING ONE WEIGHT ROOM

A Life Fitness hip abduction/adduction machine has been added to the Weight Room in Building One. It works the inner and outer thighs with simple, intuitive exercise movements. Range of motion adjustments, weight selection up to 160 lbs., and an adjustable, padded seat and back support allow comfortable use by exercisers of all sizes. Try out this great addition to the weight room! Employees who have already used it say it is great.

The new stereo for the Building One cardio room is now installed. The system is equipped with an IPOD docking station, AM/FM radio, auxiliary input for other audio sources, and a CD/MP3 player. If you use the IPOD docking station, please choose the sizing insert for your IPOD located next to the machine.

NIST EXCESS: The NIST Property Office has excess items available in Building 4, if you are interested; please contact Dale Devoe, ext. 7598, or Eva Baca, ext. 5083.

GSA EXCESS: If we do not have what you are looking for, go to the GSA’s website: http://gsaxcess.gov/. You will need to register; once that is complete; you will have access to excess property from other Federal Government agencies.

PLANNED PROJECTS

Building 1

1. EMSS staff will begin modifications to the 5th floor of Wing 5 in preparation for the upcoming move of the Human Resources to this area.  Work next week is concentrated at the North end and includes the construction of a new wall and the relocation of a door. Contact: Fred Smith, ext. 4459.

2. EMSS staff will be working throughout Building 1 servicing multiple utilities located generally in the corridor ceilings, such as installing junction box covers and sealing penetrations.  Work will be ongoing through the end of October. Contact: Jim McConnell, ext. 5660

Building 1 Extension (B1E)

1. Excavation & construction between Buildings 1 and 2 is continuing.  Contact: Bryan Faktor, ext. 7841.

Building 2

1. The walkway at the gas dock area has been changed to an emergency exit only. The North doors are posted as emergency exit only doors. This change will be for the remainder of the time they are working on the new building. Contact: Robert Gray, ext. 4936.

Site Wide (NIST)

1.  Site Improvements:   The contractor is planning to do the asphalt striping on October 3.  He will be painting crosswalks, centerlines, and walk paths.  Drive carefully around the painting equipment. Contact: Joe Carbone, ext. 3114.

2. EMSS has begun preventative maintenance activities on the site transformers. No unscheduled outages are anticipated. The maintenance personnel may be wearing full body covering protective suits, depending on which part of the electrical system they are working on. Contact: John Delight, ext. 5776.

3. Preventative maintenance activities have begun on the roof-mounted packaged air conditioners (PAC) throughout the site.  This work will be completed by the end of this month. This will require a shutdown of each unit for a maximum of 30 minutes. Room occupants affected by this work will be notified in advance. Contact: Bill Seader, ext. 6314.

4.  EMSS will continue installing fire-stop caulking in wall and floor penetrations. This work is required by the National Fire Code to maintain the integrity of firewalls. In the future, this sealing will continue from the room side of the penetration. Room occupants affected by this work will be notified in advance. Contact: John Delight, ext. 5776.

5. Preventative maintenance activities will continue on the fan coil air conditioning units in many of the rooms on site.  Room occupants affected by this work will be notified in advance. Contact: Dave Stewart, ext. 7865.

6. EMSS/Contractor has begun grading the access road to Green Mountain. Normal access to the top of the mountain will be limited. The project is scheduled to be complete on October 2.  Contact: Fred Smith, ext 4459.
