ANOTHER
GRAND SUCCESS!
BIKE TO WORK DAY BUSINESS CHALLENGE, June 24
Congratulations to all the DOC people who made the
effort to walk, bike, bus, or use alternative transportation to get themselves
to work on Bike to Work Day this past Wednesday, June 24! Thanks to the 203
people who registered on the NIST Team (including NTIA, ITS, EMSS, and CCC) in
the Business Challenge. NIST placed 3rd overall the 323 competing businesses in
Boulder. And thanks to the 203 people who registered on the NOAA team, they
placed 6th overall. (Official final results will be available later this week.)
6,325 people registered for the Boulder Business
Challenge. The longest DOC bike commuters were Matt Wagers from NOAA rode 52
miles, one-way from Ft. Collins and Lenson Pellouchoud from NIST rode 22.1 miles, one-way from
Longmont. NIST logged 1581 miles and NOAA logged 1582 miles using alternate
transportation. According to the Native Energy website calculations, we created
a combined carbon savings of 1.55 tons of carbon dioxide (assuming medium
vehicle fuel efficiency.)

LUIS ROMERO RETIREMENT LUNCH, June 29
The time has come to say
so long and honor Luis Romero for his 47 years of Federal service. Luis
has been a valuable member of the EMSS team since 1982 and is currently working
in the Inventory Management Office of EMSS. Luis’ last day at NIST will
be Thursday, July 2. We are going to have a luncheon in his honor on
Monday, June 29, at The Egg and I, at 11:30 am.
The cost is $13/person (includes meal, beverage, tax and tip). Contact
Eileen Hinkle, ext. 3955, or Vickie Grulke, ext.5654,
to make a reservation, select meal, and pay by Thursday, June 25.
We are really
going to miss Luis and hope everyone gets a chance to come up and sign the card
we have for him at the Building 4 Service Desk (and/or contribute towards a
gift).
NIST-WIDE SHELTER-IN-PLACE DRILL, Tuesday, June 30 (Note: Date Change)
The
Department of Commerce and NIST Emergency Services require each of its sites to
carry out a Shelter-in-Place (SIP) exercise at least once a year. OSHE
has scheduled our drill on Tuesday, June 30 at 10 a.m. throughout all NIST
Buildings. Everyone, including guest researchers and contractors, is
expected to cooperate.
The scenario
for this year’s exercise is a follows:
The exercise involves a fictional major chlorine spill in the vicinity of NIST.
In this type of scenario, the Boulder Department of Emergency Services will put
out a reverse 911 call instructing everyone to shelter until it can be declared
safe. Listen for further instructions given by your area’s Evacuation/SIP
Coordinator as well as over the PA system in each building at the time of the
drill. The length of the drill should be no longer than 15-20 minutes from the
time of the PA system alert to shelter until the all-clear is given. Be sure to
sign-in on your Evacuation/SIP Coordinators’ rosters. Your Evacuation
Coordinator’s names can be located on the NIST/Boulder Safety
Website. Please call Jane at ext. 4402 if you have any
questions.

EMSS began operation of the new chillers in the Central Utility Plant (CUP)
last weekend and served Building 1, Wings 3 and 4 and the 3rd floor Center
Spine East of the Wing 3 and 4 intersection, and all of 2. They were turned off
and all local chillers re-energized on June 18.
On June 22, the CUP chillers will be put back into operation while the
chillers have final commissioning done throughout the week. While these
chillers are operating, the local systems are turned off. There may be some
variations to the chilled water temperature and flow in those areas during this
changeover, though we do not anticipate any long-term swings. Contact: Bill Seader, ext. 6314.
3.
EMSS will continue the preventative maintenance work on the exhaust fans
throughout the site. Non-critical
exhaust fans are being done first. Contact: Bill Seader,

buildings:
(a) Building 1 (with exclusion of
the computer room in Wing 5)
MH1-B-switch LS4-1 (Y) will be
opened.
MH7-switch LS3-7-2 (Y) will
be opened.
This

Wing 5 transformer #026 energized (which is the computer facility panel #2573).
(b) Building 2
(c) Visitor Center
(d) Guard Shack
This
lower site power outage is needed in order to pull true tapes through existing
MV ductbank conduits. Pulling true tapes gives the
contractor the correct measurement for the future electrical lines to be
installed. Contact: Bryan Faktor, ext. 7841.
6.
On June 22, the CUP will begin providing steam to Building 1, 2, and 3 and the
