POSTDOCTORAL POSTER SYMPOSIUM AND NETWORKING
EVENT, Abstract due: May 17
Who: If you
are a postdoc, guest researcher or student, then this
event is tailored for you.
Announcement:
The 2009 (6th) Boulder Laboratories Postdoctoral Poster Symposium will be held
on Wednesday, June 17 from 1 to 4 p.m., in the DSRC GC-402. In addition to an
excellent networking opportunity for postdoctoral associates and students, this
event fosters appreciation for the breadth, novelty and excitement of research
in the Boulder Labs. A number of Outstanding Presentation awards will be
presented during the symposium. The Boulder Laboratories Diversity Council
(BLDC) is the event's sponsor, and BLDC members will furnish refreshments for
all to enjoy. Please mark your calendars and plan to participate.
Call for
abstracts: Postdoctoral associates and undergraduate or graduate student
researchers from NOAA, NIST, NTIA and each of their joint institutes are
invited to contribute presentations. We are seeking broad participation by NRC,
Guest Researchers, JILA, CIRES, CIRA, etc. affiliates who are within seven
years of an earned doctorate, and in addition, undergraduate and graduate
students who are doing research in the Boulder Labs. To be included in the
program, please send titles and abstracts to the event chair, Joseph Magee, by
May 17. Our intent is to be inclusive, so if you are not sure that you
would qualify to present, ask the event chair. You are asked to send a
text-only abstract of 100 to 250 words. An acceptance notice will be provided
for each contribution. Collected abstracts will be printed in a Symposium
Abstract Book. During the poster session, judges will listen to presentations
and select those to receive awards. Outstanding Presentation awards will be
displayed on the winning posters. Contact: Joe Magee (303) 497-3298, joe.magee@nist.gov.

Factor. This number is a multiplier that tells you how much longer you
can remain in the sun without burning when wearing a sun block. For instance,
if you can usually tolerate the sun for 10 minutes without a burn, an SPF 15
will provide you with 15 times that, or 150 minutes of protection without
burning. So, make sure you are thoroughly greased up
when you join the cool kids for the Annual Fitness Day/Raffle Walk, May

Story Highlights
* Landmarks: Laser Cooling of Atoms
"In the 1970s and 80s, researchers
developed techniques for cooling atoms to very low temperatures using laser
light. The work led to improvements in atomic clocks and the observation of a
new ultracold state of matter..."
* Quantum Blurring
"A coral reef looks a bit blurry to a
scuba diver, in part because of light bouncing off of the water's continual
density fluctuations, which come from random motions of the warm water
molecules. But some of the blurring comes from a constant quantum jiggling of
molecules that occurs even close to absolute zero temperature..."
